What Is Space Maintainer Treatment and Why Is It Necessary?
Space maintainer treatment is performed to preserve the space for the permanent tooth when a primary (baby) tooth is lost earlier than expected due to reasons such as tooth decay or trauma. This treatment prevents adjacent teeth from drifting into the empty space, reducing the risk of future crowding and orthodontic problems.
Depending on the patient’s needs, treatment may involve fixed space maintainers (bonded to the teeth) or removable space maintainers (which the child can insert and remove). The dentist takes an impression of the mouth, and a custom-made appliance is fabricated in a dental laboratory. It is generally worn until the permanent tooth begins to erupt.
Space maintainers help permanent teeth erupt in the correct position, support proper chewing and speech functions, and minimize the need for future orthodontic treatment. This treatment is provided by the Department of Pediatric Dentistry (Pedodontics).
This treatment is generally recommended for children between the ages of 3 and 12 when a primary tooth is lost six months or more before its expected natural exfoliation.
Care and Important Considerations
Avoid sticky or very hard foods such as chewing gum and Turkish delight while wearing a space maintainer. Continue brushing your teeth regularly; dental floss should be used with fixed appliances, while removable appliances should be cleaned after every meal. Regular dental check-ups every six months are recommended to monitor the condition of the space maintainer.
