What Is Dental Scaling and Why Is It Performed?

Dental scaling is the professional removal of hardened plaque deposits (tartar or calculus) that cannot be eliminated by regular tooth brushing. Tartar forms when bacterial plaque combines with minerals found in saliva. If left untreated, it can lead to gingivitis, periodontitis, persistent bad breath, and even tooth loss.

Procedure and Methods

Scaling is typically performed using ultrasonic instruments that break up tartar with high-frequency vibrations, along with precision hand instruments for hard-to-reach areas. After the tartar has been removed, the teeth are polished with a special polishing paste to create a smooth surface, helping to delay future plaque accumulation. Depending on the amount of tartar present, the procedure usually takes 30 to 60 minutes.

Before and After the Procedure

Inform your dentist if you are taking blood-thinning medications or have any existing medical conditions before treatment. Avoid eating or drinking for the first 1–2 hours after the procedure. Mild tooth sensitivity to hot and cold, as well as slight gum bleeding during the first few days, is considered normal. Since teeth are more susceptible to staining immediately after scaling, it is recommended to avoid smoking and consuming tea or coffee for a short period.

Recommendations for Preventing Tartar Formation

To minimize tartar buildup and maintain good oral health, brush your teeth 2–3 times a day for approximately 3 minutes, holding the toothbrush at a 45-degree angle toward the gum line. Use dental floss or an interdental brush at least once a day. Limit the consumption of sugary, starchy, and sticky foods. Quit smoking and avoid tobacco products, as they increase the risk of tartar formation. Visit your dentist for a routine examination every six months.
